The Legal Officer will work across PI on advocacy, policy, research, and public engagement initiatives in order to formulate new and creative ways to demand change and achieve PI’s policy and advocacy goals including working with our partners across the world. This will include identifying creative approaches to national and global advocacy and pursuing legal avenues to hold governments and companies to account.

The Legal Officer will:
- engage with targeted stakeholders, including governments and industry, and the public.
- devise, implement and manage advocacy designed to achieve PI’s strategic objectives.
- support and promote our partner organisations’ advocacy.
- assist in assessing and reviewing our advocacy for legal risks faced by PI.
- understand and work within a variety of local, national and international jurisdictions, including those governed by common law or civil law.
About our work: We are a London-based charity working on a multi-year strategic plan that includes interventions designed to defend against government assaults on civic engagement; prevent data exploitation during the election cycle; protect our identities, security, and social, cultural and political rights from vulnerabilities created by the deployment of new technologies; and restrain government and corporate exploitation of data more broadly.

- Law degree, in any jurisdiction.
- Admitted to practice in the UK (England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland), as a solicitor or barrister.
- Experience working on issues relating to technology and its interaction with human rights.
- Experience assessing and mitigating legal risks faced by organisations.
- Experience of taking creative approaches to novel avenues to hold governments and companies to account.
- Knowledge of and experience working with international human rights standards and/or national rights frameworks, and with the human rights community.
- Knowledge of the broader rights frameworks, and in particular the protection of social, economic and cultural rights.
- Experience working with legal issues related to data and privacy, including data protection, or the legal concerns raised by techniques such as automated decision-making and profiling.
- Proven track record of communicating complex issues to diverse audiences.
- Ability to work with and manage relationships with stakeholders including within the legal community, partner organisations, and coalitions.
- Ability to manage projects, work in teams, and incorporate lessons into future planning.
- Strong interpersonal skills that can be applied to communicating and engaging with colleagues and external audiences from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
- Proactive and self-motivated, capable of working unsupervised and taking responsibility for managing relationships with key partners, stakeholders and policymakers.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the highest level of attention to detail.
- University qualification in social sciences, development, or related fields.
- Experience of strategically engaging with and targeting decision-makers and actors of change in countries of engagement including governmental actors, civil society and the media, but also amongst the wider international community, inter-governmental, industry and other non-state actors.
- Experience of strategically engaging with diverse communities across cultures.
- Experience in NGOs/human rights organisations, law firms or in-house, working on litigation or legal action initiatives.
- Experience drafting and editing contracts and other legal instruments.
- Ability to speak publicly, including with the media and at conferences and stakeholder meetings.
- Fluency in a language other than English.
- Willing and able to travel internationally, when permitted.
