Identity What PI is Doing

Body

Identity systems thrive across the world because of the mix of: wild optimism around the gains provided by an ID system, a lack of democractic debate due to lack of legal frameworks, problematic and vague drivers used to justify expansive systems, ignorance of the complex technical and legal details that give rise to new challenges, and inattention the context in which these systems are deployed. PI reveals the reality of a deployed identity system and its technologies, explores the burden of responsibility that goes with creating an identity system, advocates for a rethinking of the drivers, demands necessary safeguards in technology and law, and campaigns for people who are targeted or excluded.

Privacy International is working with our partners in our international network to challenge the drivers that are pushing governments and others towards identity systems. We are developing educational materials to aid civil society organisations to advocate for protections so that identity does not become an impediment to human dignity and autonomy.
