Thousands of dissidents in 40 countries were imprisoned for posting or reposting social, political, or religious content on social media between June 2021 and May 2022, according to the Freedom on the Net 2022 report.  The report calls China, the most repressive of the 40, "the world's worst environment for internet freedom"; the country has detained journalists, human rights activists, members of religious and ethnic minority groups, and ordinary users. It is highlighted that protesters need new and improved tools to protect themselves and keep their causes alive against authoritarian governments.
