In the year after protests began in Iran in September 2022, Telegram has emerged as the social medium of choice for both the protesters and the regime they oppose. The Iranian authorities have been able to use Telegram to identify and shame protesters and broadcast false confessions, as well as mount disinformation campaigns. In September 2023, the authorities increased penalties for violations of the hijab law.
