Massive E-Learning Platform Udemy Gave Teachers a Gen AI 'Opt-Out Window'. It's Already Over.

Udemy has begun using instructor-created courses to train its generative AI, automatically enrolling teachers following a brief opt-out period. That window has now closed, leaving many unable to withdraw consent, sparking anger over Udemy's processes.

Some instructors, including long-time contributors, say they were unaware of the policy until after the deadline, describing the process as opaque and exploitative.

Several have left the platform entirely. Udemy argued that annual opt-out windows are necessary due to the difficulty of removing trained data but promises revenue sharing and safeguards.
