Egypt: Data of Tens of Thousands of Students Compromised
The Egyptian government and UK-based Academic Assessment Ltd. exposed over 72,000 children’s records linked to the Egyptian Scholastic Test (EST), a university entrance exam for American Diploma students, Human Rights Watch revealed.
The unprotected database contained names, addresses, ID copies, disability status, test scores, and even exam proctor notes, and remained online for at least eight months. Over 100 children, identified by name, had some form of disability.
Egypt’s Education Ministry and the National Council for Human Rights did not respond to requests for comment, and the data remained accessible on Amazon Web Services until Amazon was notified by Human Rights Watch.
