In April 2025, prosecutors in Paraná, Brazil initiated legal action against the state government over a program that scans students’ faces to log school attendance.

The initiative, introduced two years earlier, requires teachers to capture images of entire classes, which are then analysed to confirm who is present.

Authorities contend the measure unlawfully handles the biometric information of almost one million minors, without clear parental approval or adequate safeguards.

They are seeking R$15 million in compensation and a halt to the practice, following a United Nations Special Rapporteur report calling for governments worldwide to prohibit facial recognition in educational settings.
