InternetLab report reveals expansion of facial recognition in Brazillian schools
InternetLab have found a significant increase in the rollout of facial recognition across Brazillian's state schools.
Their 2023 report found that just 1 state, of those that responded to them, had deployed the technology, along with 9 states' municipal schools. In 2025 this number has significantly increased, with the technology now being used in 7 states. This is of the 18 that responded to freedom of information requests - a further 8 states did not respond and so cannot be included in the numbers.
InternetLab found serious problems with the regulatory environment, the safeguards in place, the understanding of the technology, and the transparency with which is has been rolled out.
