Haki na Sheria

Haki na Sheria Initiative (HSI) is a non-governmental organisation based in Garissa, Kenya and it is dedicated to ending the discrimination and promoting the rights of marginalised communities in Northern Kenya. The organization’s focuses on statelessness in the Garissa county, environmental justice, and issues that negatively impact women’s lives, including lack of access to justice, education and gainful employment.

The Play That Taught Garissa Its Rights

Kenya's digital identity system, Maisha Namba, aims to digitalise civil and personal registration, utilising a Unique Personal Identification (UPI) and Digital ID, among other features. 

However, the system fails to address issues previously identified by PI and its partners. Haki na Sheria Initiative (HSI) has flagged potential constitutional violations, including of the right to privacy and discrimination against marginalised communities.

In response, HSI organised the community-led play: "My ID, My Right / Aqoonsigayga Waa Xuquuqdayda".

Joint stakeholder report regarding the 49th Universal Periodic Review – Kenya

Privacy International, Kenya Legal & Ethical Issues Network on HIV and AIDS (KELIN), ICJ-Kenya, Haki Na Sheria Initiative and STOPAIDS submitted a joint stakeholder report to the 49th session of the Universal Periodic Review regarding Kenya's review. 

Our joint submission raised issues regarding elections, health and economic and social justice.
