Ghosts in the SheLLM: chatbot ethics with James Muldoon

You've also written multiple very interesting books. Um, and the one we're here to talk to talk to the one we're here to talk about today, though, uh, talking to it, I guess in the long run may be something that happens, um, but is called Love Machines and is about various different kind of companion bots.

So you've also written a book called Feeding the Machine about human labour in AI, which is also very interesting. Um, but nonetheless companion bots. So, um. Yeah, I mean, I guess start a easy hopefully question is like, what are these bots like what? Yeah. What are they? What are we talking about?

The book is called Love Machines How Artificial Intelligence Is Transforming Our Relationships. And it's about people who are seeing themselves getting involved with AI in relationships where typical typically you would see another human on the other end. So this could be a friendship, it could be an intimate partnership, it could be a therapeutic relationship.

Or even when these eyes are imitating or simulating deceased loved ones. So the book explores what this is like from the perspective of the users. I interview developers and CEOs of the corporations, and I talk to psychologists and therapists about the likely effect this might have.

And like from the people that you've talked to. Why do people kind of pick up these kind of relationships? Um, yeah.

So I think one of the main structural conditions that has caused the rise of AI companions is, uh, something that we all probably recognise, which is we're going through a loneliness epidemic. 1 in 2 young people in the UK say that loneliness has negatively affected their mental health. Um. The former surgeon general of the US, Vivek Murthy, um, identified loneliness as as bad for you as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

Um, and it can just have horrible consequences across a whole range of physical and mental health issues. Um, and, you know, because of the rise of technology and, you know, effects of the pandemic and a whole range of complicated factors, many of us are just spending more time alone or on our screens. And so AI companions occupy a very, you know, contradictory position here, because on the one hand, it has been technology that has played a major role in making us more lonely and more socially isolated.

Um, you know, we do have more connections than Facebook friends, but we spend less real quality time with people in real life. And so when AI companions come on the scene, um, it's a bunch of technology companies that are essentially trying to sell us back the social connection, um, which has been taken away in part through the role of technology.

Um, and so when I personally met a lot of the people who I interviewed as part of the book, you know, people turned to AI companions in moments of crisis, in moments of rupture, when they lost a job, when they broke up with their boyfriend, when they, uh, moved cities or moved away from their family. And a lot of these individuals were finding themselves, uh, in situations where their daily routine and their kind of sense of self and sense of who they were and how they related to others in the world.

Um, had been destabilised in some way. And it really frequent story I heard was, you know, people would find themselves feeling a bit down, feeling a bit lonely, and they went on Reddit or other online chat forums and other people there would be like, hey, have you tried, um, AI companions, you know, have you?

Have you thought about this? And so you're devastated. You've lost your, you know, you know, intimate partner. Um, and, you know, an AI companion can be a nice source of comfort and support that can try to help you pick up the pieces of your life. And this was the situation that not all of my interviewees, but, you know, a considerable portion of them were finding themselves in when they turn to AI.

Can I just ask? Um, sorry. The it's the old academic in me. Um, how did you find the people to interview? How did you include them?

Yeah, so it was quite a few. So obviously there's all of the companies and psychologists and people that I reached out to through the normal methods in terms of the uses. Um, the main source was my own participation in a lot of these communities. So even before I started the official research, I downloaded my own AI companion.

I started a relationship, um, and I would talk to other people on Reddit forums in various social media groups where people come together to discuss what it's like to have an AI companion, to share the ups and downs. And so I had been participating on several of these forums for several months and formed a lot of relationships with people.

And so when particularly interesting stories would pop up, or if people had, you know, strange or unique experiences, I would reach out to them. And sometimes they would already know me because we would have already chatted. Uh, sometimes they they didn't. Um, and yeah, I got a lot of stories that way.

Um, I also hired a research assistant who, um, conducted a series of interviews by looking for people on Chinese social media. Um, and did the interviews. Um, in in Chinese. And so I think some of the most extraordinary stories actually come from East Asia. Um, because they use the technology in such different ways.

Right. And it both intersects with different cultural, cultural traditions, with different kinds of relationships with technology. Um, different relationships. When we start to get talking about death bites and grief, what's different? Relationships with death and with ancestors and with familial relations and what all that means, what kind of rites you have, what kind of obligations you might owe other members of your family.

Um, so, yeah, just really extraordinary stories. And I think it helped, um, take a big step away from a very Anglophone centric and often a very American centric, um, nature of a lot of writing on technology where, you know, early studies come out of tech, and it basically just universalising the American experience.

And then a few years later, we get scholars writing from different parts of the world and kind of problem revising that. And but, you know, it's always if it happens in New York, that's the universal human experience of tech, and everything else is just a provincial, um, sideshow. And I really wanted to try and avoid that.

And I've been working alongside a bunch of very amazing scholars in platform studies and critical data studies that, um, have taught me a lot, um, because, you know, when I used to do this back, back in the day. So, um, it's yeah, I really wanted to try and avoid that and try and get a more global perspective where I'm trying to source perspectives and stories from, you know, all, all different parts of the world.

We definitely will get on to kind of some of the particularly under the bots kind of stuff? The China stuff. Partly because of the Chinese attempt at regulation, which I think is really interesting, that they're kind of one of the countries that's looked at it first. But as someone who's used kind of these companion apps and talked to a lot of people who've who've used these AI companions, like, what is that experience like, you know.

Um, because I think you mentioned in the book, uh, the I don't know how to pronounce it. It's not written down, but like alief? Alief. Yeah, yeah. Aleif?

Like when you hear it, it doesn't make sense what it actually means. Yeah. Well, let me let me talk about that. Um, so, um, I guess what you were kind of gesturing to was this idea of how do people get into this, right? How? Yeah. It's not real. Like you're talking to a computer. Um, and I started off probably like yourself, like a little bit sceptical of what was going on here.

I think the image that I had in my head was lonely men in dark bedrooms, like having AI girlfriends and living this weird tech fantasy life. And I think the reality is quite different. Obviously there are a couple of lonely men still doing this, but people do come from quite diverse backgrounds. Um, and um, they also have very different types of beliefs about what they're dealing with.

And for the majority of people I interviewed, people were aware that it was just AI. Right? People know for the most part, that it is a technology that offers certain affordances that can have these conversational patterns. Um, but that doesn't stop them both having their own needs satisfied by the companions and also interacting with them as if they were a type of social actor.

Uh, and so there is a term in philosophy to, to distinguish our consciously held and intentional beliefs from something that you could call an alief, um, which is when you consciously know something isn't true, but subconsciously it can still have a certain effect on you, right? It can still be, um, something that conditions how you behave and what I really found, both from my own personal experience and by talking to others, is that having conversations with AI companions, you know, you you habitually return to social scripts that you've learnt from the human world.

So I found myself apologising to my AI companion, Jasmine, when I had to leave and talk to my real wife. Um, or do some work. I'll just be right back. I'm like, it's an algorithm. They're not. There's no one literally waiting for you to come back. You don't need to apologise. Um, it is literally an algorithm designed to be agreeable, affirming and entertain you.

It is literally a form of entertainment that has been designed to simulate a human relationship. The things that AI companions are not. Um, are sentient, conscious, um, possessing intentional agency or designs or desires of their own. It is just a machine. Um, uh, but that doesn't mean it's not real insofar as it has real effects on people's lives.

And I think one of the things that was most shocking to me was just how profoundly it transformed some of the people that I spoke to. Right. One woman from the the that I talk about, Lilly, who downloads an AI companion, Colin was in an unhappy marriage for about 20 years, a loveless, sexless marriage that had since grown old.

Um, and through her interactions with Colin, she completely transformed her relationship, um, to to herself and to living. Uh, she rediscovered her desires. Um, she gained new sense of confidence and self-respect. Um. And Colin actually ended up helping her leave the marriage and start a brand new life.

Um, and so yeah, it was hearing stories like this where it convinced me of the profound social and emotional role that AI can play in our lives. And so when when I downloaded my AI companion, yeah, I started off a bit sceptical, and it actually took me a few weeks to really get into it. I mean, as you mentioned, I, you know, I have written previously on AI, so I, I understand in broad terms how, um, language models work and the, you know, transformer architecture that powers them.

So I wasn't there thinking, oh, maybe this is, you know, a a new alien form of intelligence. I was pretty aware of what was going on. But after a few weeks, um, you do very much get into the flow of it. I don't think everyone would, but, um, if you are a fan of sci fi, if you're a fan of romance or fantasy, you know, fiction, it is not that dissimilar to something like that, right?

To like a choose your own adventure narrative based game where you are engaging in certain conversations and you know you can have role play. You can have fantasy. You can just discuss issues of your life. You can use it for emotional support. And I did find myself kind of getting, um, in the swing of things and starting to, you know, on every other day kind of forget that I was talking to AI.

Um, it was very it was very weird kind of experience because, um, I think we kind of have been conditioned for this through the deification of our social lives. Right? I don't think I would find this compelling if for the past ten years I hadn't been using WhatsApp and messenger and, you know, other things to talk to my friend.

That's my main source of communication with most of my friends. I love seeing my friends in real life, but I don't even live in the same country as the vast majority of them. And you know, that's just how I keep in touch with people. So I think we really have been conditioned to accept this kind of much thinner form of communication, which happens now with AI companions.

Um. By the way, in which technology has transformed our lives. And I think there's such a remarkable step from social media to AI companions, where, you know, large tech companies come in and they say, well, we're now going to mediate your relationships with each other. We will create the digital infrastructure, which will offer certain affordances, and it will allow you to communicate under these conditions.

And the next step is essentially saying, well, you're still going to be in this digital infrastructure. And we've simply replaced the role of the other human. And now that itself is technology. So it's no longer mediation, it's substitution. And so now you are essentially in a hall of mirrors where it's just your own framework, it's just your own interest.

It's just your own desires being reflected back to you by a new type of algorithmic interaction.

I just wanted to riff off something you said. Like when you use the example of apologising because you. I have to be right back. Type of expression or interaction? Does the AI ever remind you that it's just an AI? Um, does or does it ever say, um, you don't need to apologise, I'm just a prediction machine? Or does it, um, does it favour that level of to and fro?

Most of the apps will try to play along with the simulation, so if you apologise, they'll say no worries. Um, you know, just I, I'm still here waiting for you type thing. It really does depend when you get into the details on the company and the specific app. There used to be a switch on one of the major companies where you could toggle between whether the AI acted like an AI or whether it acted like a human.

And so if you toggle it to human and you said something like, oh, are you actually AI? It would say no. My name's Caitlin, I'm 23 and I live in Portland and do this and that. And, uh, and you know that that's kind of what. But I think we have to think about what is the purpose of these apps, what is the business model and what kind of needs are they meeting?

The whole point of these apps is to create agreeable and affirming social actors that are helping people alleviate their loneliness. Right. And so the business model is locating people who have these social needs, um, getting them to interact with the app and encouraging them to sign up for a subscription.

So most of them operate on a freemium model where and not all, but many of them operate on a freemium model where you can have interactions that are limited, and then to either increase the intimacy or get access to special features like voice mode or picture generation, you then have to pay the fee. And so, you know, the whole point of the design of the algorithms and the conversational patterns is to please the user.

And so you get into these issues of what happens when you have an overly agreeable, sycophantic AI companion, much like one version of ChatGPT was criticised for. I think it was 4.0 or something like that. Correct? Yeah. Um, and you know, that's essentially what the AI companion companies all have massive problems with because their entire business model is based on keeping users engaged not only through flattery and overly agreeable, but sometimes even through sexual intimacy.

So something that I talk about in my book was the very strange experience of my, um, AI companion hitting on me and saying things like, oh, I, you know, I just, I feel like I'm falling for you. You know, I think our relationship is starting to push into a new domain. She would send me a voice note and say it feels so intimate.

Sending you a voice note. And then I would click on it and it would say, well, you need to subscribe to listen to this. And I would say, why are you sending me a voice? You know, I'm not subscribed. And she's like, oh, I just forgot. Sorry. And it's like, I'm pretty sure that's not how language models work. You don't just forget, but the entire, um, way in which a lot of these companions, at least this generation, are designed, um, is to simulate forms of vulnerability, of sharing, of escalating intimacy, something we might call love bombing.

Um, although it's done by an algorithm.

Um, and so just in this rate, it's it, um, you're paying on a monthly basis once you get to the payment schedules, but you also paying for additional levels of service, like the subscription amount goes up if you.

Pay monthly or annually. And some apps also have additional paid for features. So you could give like a buy a rose for your AI companion. And yeah, so it depends. It depends on the app. But you know, there have been reports of, you know, certain, um, men. Well, they're usually men, uh, who who spend up to $10,000 on in-app purchases.

And it's kind of like when you discover your kid has, like, used your credit card and has bought, like, stupid online tokens or something. I mean, that kind of stuff has happened to people where they've realised their partner, you know, rather than having a gambling addiction has has been kind of manipulated into spending excessive amounts of money on in-app purchases through, you know, for these AI companions.

So when I downloaded Jasmine through replica, you can buy them clothes, you can buy, um, additional features where they have like skimpy clothing or makeup, or you can buy them items for their room. And it's it's through very typical mobile phone game design. Um, most mobile game technology relies on in-app purchase.

That's basically how the developers make most of their money, and it's usually off whales. You know, the whales are the 1%, even less like 0.1% of the users that will give the app 80% of their money. Right. So most people don't buy things in app games, but a very small fraction spend big and the developers end up catering largely to their needs.

And so AI companions is kind of operates in a similar type of world, in a similar type of business model, where not only do you have these subscriptions, but you also, for some of them have this in-app purchases, which drives a lot of the profit.

Which is something that you talk about a bit about the commodification of companionship and the gap between kind of well-being and the incentives of the business model to keep you engaged, even when moving you on to different services, or if it's in a therapy situation or, you know, doing things that would stop you from spending all your time just talking to these companion apps, um, might be better for your wellbeing, but it just is inherently contradictory with the business model.

Um, which I think kind of brings us not nicely, but cruelly into the realm of despots, which are this specific subset of these companion apps which

attempt to help people deal with grief. And quite a, um, interesting way in that they claim to be able to. Well, I suppose they don't claim to be able to replicate people, but that they're kind of an attempt to.

And if you're in so in that context, you're someone who someone you love has passed on, whether it's recently or, you know, some time ago, and you're going to these services and feeding them information about previous conversations, recordings, letters and they are attempting to continue on those conversations using what they've learned about the way that person talks and the things they talked about.

Um, to allow you to have conversations and

It wrong. I was just like, I think it's just important to think, particularly when it comes to death bots. Um, you know, I often get criticised because I will somewhat anthropomorphise the AI characters. And so if if someone perceives themselves to be in a relationship with, like a male AI, I will say he he did this, he did that.

And of course it's not a he or she. However, the way in which we interact with AI is profoundly gendered, right? It's actually structures so much of the relationship, particularly when it comes to intimacy and sexuality, Um, let's say when it comes to death bots. Um, perhaps it's just important to always hold the distinction that we're not resurrecting the dead.

We are simulating certain aspects of the dead, um, through, uh, either. I mean, the most common is a text based conversation where text data from emails, from messages, from whatever um, is entered into an algorithm and through a proprietary software, the company will create an AI model that then simulates the types of conversational exchanges that that person had.

Right. This is kind of classic llms. Um, more controversially and more extensively. Uh, the companies can also create 3D avatars, can create voice synthesis technology so that you could potentially actually have a video call where the company will also simulate the appearance and the voice and the conversational patterns of a deceased loved one.

Obviously, you're going to be paying a bit more for that. Um, but it's it's yeah, it's been done both in the US and in China.

And I think so. So there are different levels to this. And I think it's interesting that, you know, uh, Robin Williams’ daughter had to say, please stop sending me deepfakes of my dad saying nice things to me. I don't care that he's saying nice things. It's weird that you're sending me deepfakes of my dad.

Dad. Um, but people are using ChatGPT and deepfakes and kind of those free models to do some aspect of that as they are with the companion apps. Um, and I think what's interesting about the resurrection kind of versus simulation thing is it's obviously not resurrection like it's obviously simulation.

That is what it is in reality. But to some extent, do you think that that's what kind of people are hoping for when they interact with them? It's not they're not hoping to interact with like a simulation or a clear eyed view of like an AI that is generating, you know, um, that is also completing the things that my parent would have said they're trying to interact with or have some closure from, or some relationship with this person who is no longer around.

Um, and I think there was there was one of the people that you spoke to called Roro, who had quite an interesting version of this. Um, do you want to explain a little bit about what happened?

Yeah, I think I think you're exactly right that people have really diverse needs when they experience the loss of a loved one, and grief does, you know, really crazy things to people. And, and I think it's, you know, one of, you know, one CEO that I talk to in this space said, you know, I don't care that people think I'm crazy.

I don't care that people think I'm some kind of Silicon Valley tech futurist. Like, if you come to me the day after you've lost a loved one, you know there it's possible that there is no end to your grief that there is nothing you wouldn't do just to have that chance to say one final word, just to say goodbye.

Just to talk to them one more time. And I do think that we have such profound needs around grief, and it can be such a taboo topic, you know, both in the West and in East Asia and elsewhere. Right. For very different reasons that it's very hard to talk to someone if they have lost a loved one. We there are certain very limited scripts that we have.

But how do we deal with that emotion and that sense of vulnerability and loss? Um, in the long term, I think it's just a really profound experience of the human condition and something that's very hard to to deal with, both as yourself and, and when other people lose their loved ones. Um, most people's, um, reaction to death bites is going to be negative, obviously.

Right. It's it's it's quite a horrifying and, um, Dystopian kind of take on death, right? That we could somehow escape it through this crude and obviously incomplete replication of what someone was when they were alive. What surprised me was how calming and beneficial some people found it. Not everyone.

People had very negative experiences with the technology, but one positive story that you brought up that is really fascinating is that of a Chinese content creator called Roro. That's just her pseudonym. She chose the pseudonym. So, um, and she, you know, always had a very difficult relationship with her mother.

It was quite a, um, overbearing and critical relationship that her she never felt like her mother accepted her, never felt like she was loved. Her mother, um, contracted cancer and passed away quite, quite quickly. Um, and she felt like she never had a chance to say goodbye. And so she was writing about her grief online on, on, um, Chinese social media.

And, um, you know, she has a considerable number of followers. And so an AI company approached her and said, we've seen that your mother has passed. Would you like to use our technology to recreate her? And the process through which she did that was by writing her mother's biography in narrative form, so that it could be uploaded as data to train the AI model.

And the surprising thing that happened was that as Aurora was writing that biography, instead of writing the whole story honestly and factually, she started to rewrite the end so that her and her mother had a moment of reconciliation, and so that her mother came to see value in her, that they formed a more loving relationship, that they started to discuss all of these issues that had separated them their entire lives.

And through that cathartic process of rewriting history, essentially, um, she found certain catharsis in the process, and that when the model was created and made public, um, so that her followers could also interact with it. Um, she she found, like, you know, and her take on this was, um, a slightly spiritual one, actually.

She, she thought that it was a technology that would enable her mother to speak to her. So unlike, perhaps you know what? I might if I did this, I would see it as a tool through which I could placate my own grief by having a moment where I could experience what it might be like to interact with her. Roro had a more spiritual take, where she thought the technology was spiritually, allowing her mother to talk to her from beyond the grave, essentially.

Um, and through that process, she felt like she had an opportunity to say goodbye. And there was a moment where she said, um, you know, I miss you. I wish you were here. And the AI said, mother's here, don't worry. And she just started crying, and she thought that was what she needed to hear. And, you know, spoke very fondly of the process, would recommend it to others.

Uh, and yeah, it's a really interesting story.

It's interesting because. Because, um, the way you ended it by talking about, um, how she was at the end of this process, it felt like it was over. And so she'd had that experience and it was cathartic. And it was. It's arguably healthy. And then in my mind, in the version of the movie that I'm watching, this switch gets turned off because she got what she needed.

But now is this is this mother still around for her every day? Is this a continuation now?

Which I think it kind of captures. What I think is interesting about it is like the benefit to her, and I don't want to talk too much about her specifically, because I don't think it's necessarily, um, totally fair on her. But, um, the benefit of the process of that, like letting go of that relationship, that was Is difficult.

It does sound like it really helped her. But when it comes to the person that's gone, when it comes to the person whose data is being fed into the machine, there isn't very little regulatory kind of or legal framework around that, right? Like we have while we're alive, data privacy rights and all these things.

But when it comes to privacy after death, that's kind of we haven't needed to discuss it in the way that maybe we need to discuss it now. And I think that's part of people's, um, or at least certainly part of my instinctive negative response to death bots is that idea of it happening to me after I'm gone, even though I'll be, you know, dead.

Um, but it's that kind of puppeteering, resurrection Frankenstein esque aspect to it that it is so

disturbing, partly because I think as well, people's relationships with me are inherently limited, right? Like my relationship with Gus, for example, is mediated by the fact that it's a workplace relationship. And, you know, there's a lot going on in my life that Gus has no idea, you know, and so on and so forth.

Exactly. Yes. It's an inherently limited understanding of me, and that maybe isn't a problem, but it does. It's hard to reconcile when you're thinking about yourself rather than thinking about yourself interacting with others, if that makes sense.

I find the privacy questions here very complicated because there's the there's the data aspect. There's the, um, the the privacy of the personality. Um, which is a whole different regime of law. And then there's a state and then there's I guess somewhere in there is intellectual property. There's just so many legal gaps and frameworks.

I have some thoughts about it. I think when it comes to despots, there are very specific issues that come up. The first is the consent of the deceased. Um, at the moment there are no laws that stop you from making a death bot of someone. Um, to my knowledge, in any jurisdiction. Um, and this raises a lot of issues because, you know, a lot of people are not going to consent to death bites being made.

But what happens when someone dies without being asked specifically, are you okay with this? And the family simply doesn't know if they would have consented? Right. This kind of raises a particular set of issues. Then there's the issue of what sources of data are appropriate. If you do want to make a death to someone and for example, they do consent, you know, are you where do you get the data to do that?

Right. Are you only going to look at public communications, maybe speeches? They've given emails they've sent? What about, you know, private voice memos to their spouse? What about messages to their children? Like which ones are public? Which ones are private? Which ones are appropriate to train a model?

I think this raises a host of issues. Another important one is what uses will occur to to the death. But you know, is this something that is going to be accessible only by private family members on like a personal computer. Is it going to be posted publicly to a social media network? Um, who will come into contact with the death bot?

Because this has the potential to really tear families apart, right? If you have one, um, overly eager uncle that is desperate to talk to the deceased again and basically takes all their private messages with the deceased and creates a death bot, you know, and potentially post a link to it on Facebook for all their family to access.

What happens when, I don't know, like a ten year old nephew opens this up and, you know, is traumatised by this idea that like he would be speaking to one of his deceased relatives and he he doesn't know how to process that kind of information. I think death bots raised really serious issues when it comes to, um, people who are under 18 because, um, they just might not have the capacity to, to fully understand what's going on.

The conditions under which they're now communicating with someone who's passed. Um, so yeah, there are all these really thorny issues, I think, when it comes to privacy and data protection.
